Roles and permissions

PasteBase uses a role-based permission system to control what each team member can do. When someone joins a team, they're assigned one of three roles: Owner, Editor, or Member. Each role has a clear set of capabilities so you can give people exactly the access they need — no more, no less.

Owner

Owners have full control over the team. This is the role assigned to whoever creates the team, and it can be granted to others via invitation or by changing an existing member's role.

Owners can:

  • Create, edit, and delete any paste in the team
  • View and copy all pastes
  • Invite new members and set their roles
  • Change the roles of existing members
  • Remove members from the team
  • Edit team settings (name, slug, etc.)
  • Delete the team entirely
  • Generate and revoke shareable access links

Editor

Editors are active contributors to the paste collection. They can manage pastes but don't have control over team membership or settings.

Editors can:

  • Create new pastes in the team
  • Edit and delete pastes they created
  • View and copy all pastes

Editors cannot invite members, change roles, edit team settings, or delete the team. This makes Editor a good default role for people who actively maintain and update the team's paste collection.

Member

Members have read-only access to the team's pastes. They can browse and copy but cannot make any changes.

Members can:

  • View all pastes in the team
  • Copy pastes to their clipboard

Members cannot create, edit, or delete pastes, and they have no access to team settings or member management. This role is ideal for people who just need to use the pastes — like support agents who need to copy canned responses but shouldn't be editing the templates.

Choosing the right role

Here are some practical guidelines:

  • Make one or two people Owner — typically team leads or managers who need to control membership and settings.
  • Make content maintainers Editor — anyone who should be creating and updating pastes regularly.
  • Make everyone else Member — people who need to use the pastes but shouldn't be changing them.

Changing roles

Owners can change any member's role from the team settings page. Role changes take effect immediately — if you promote a Member to Editor, they can start creating pastes right away. If you downgrade an Editor to Member, they'll lose editing access to the pastes they previously created.
